Color Theory | Student Work

Color theory is a set of guidelines which artist and designers use to communicate messages. Color can set the tone for the overall mood of a design and visually appeal to a specific audience. Color can support visual hierarchy and clarity and an understanding of how color works is necessary to make a design accessible. This involves knowledge of human optical ability, psychology, and culture. We can predict, with some degree of certainty, that people will respond in a consistent way when they see a color. While the language of color is universally understood, some color's meanings have social or cultural connotations that must be researched in order to connect with an audience.

In my coursework, we not only experiment with how color interacts within the eye and mind but we also research the cultural implications of color. The end goal is to create purposeful, meaningful designs that are well-informed and considerate of the people who will interact with them.
